For setting spelling homework, I test the class on the upcoming spellings and each child highlights 5 words they spelled incorrectly to use as their homework words. For children who do not make any mistakes, I usually tip-ex out the words on their sheet and add in some trickier words, either from their writing, our other learning in class or from the same rule as the others.
We give out house points for any additional homework they do as well as their statutory homework.
