Who owns the beach? This ESL lesson focuses on private beaches and whether they should exist. Should beaches be open to the public? Or should the public at large have to pay to go to the beach? During this lesson, students will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of public spaces, while analyzing the efforts in Malibu to limit public access to public beaches. This lesson will also expose students to the ins and outs of a city government. Giving them an opportunity to learn useful vocabulary about property rights and city laws. Overall, this lesson promises to promote discourse between you and your students about the value of public spaces.
