This novel is set in Nazi-occupied Holland in 1944, towards the end of World War II, a time of great hunger. Dart and Tamar are two Dutch soldiers staying in a farm owned by grandmother Oma (who is unable to speak) and her granddaughter Marijke. Britain and Holland fought on the same side in this war

This lesson allows KS3 students to consider the themes, language and structure of a text set in Holland in the resistance during WW2. The extract is approached on a step by step basis, making the resource suitable for KS3 students beginning GCSE style studies or weaker KS4 students who find Language Paper 1 texts challenging. The subject matter is popular and allows students to apply prior knowledge and context to the text.

There is also an original / creative writing task, which allows students to develop ideas they have considered in the extract

This resource could also be used for History students to find out about the effects of German occupation
