This genetic traits probability sketch activity is perfect for teaching genetics related biology and the concept of Punnett squares. You can print or provide digital and with minimal equipment - all you need is a single coin per student pair / group to play this particular game and educate and entertain at the same time. There are 5 creatures provided and two levels of possible engagement so that you can bring the right level of Punnett square and probability related knowledge on the topic of dominant and recessive traits.
This activity is structured in such a way that students build their specific genetic vocabulary covering terms such as genotype, phenotype, gametes, dominant and recessive characteristics, heterozygotes, homozygotes and more. There are stunning visual worked into this activity to show the relevant dominant and recessive traits and provide inspiration for students.
For both the accessible and advanced levels students use a coin to figure out what traits the relevant creature will have (a fox, frog, rock hopper penguin, clown fish or pocket dragon of legend).
For the first level - an accessible resource - students will do two coin flips as both parents are always assumed to be heterozygotes in this level of engagement. They are then encourage to figure out the probability of their creatures exact characteristics occurring for all 5 characteristics of their creature and sketch it too.
For the second level - an advanced resource - They are similarly to sketch and work out probabilities, however additionally now students will use the coin flips to figure out the parent genotypes (FF, Ff or ff) ie: dominant homozygote, heterozygote or recessive homozygote and this adds a further layer of complexity. Making it more challenging and intriguing for students to do.
