This is an extract based activity on a popular novel. - Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. Students will be able to bring lots of contextual knowledge to discussions about this text. There are lots of activities, including assessing prior knowledge of the text, establishing facts about Victorian London and thinking about the effects of poverty.

This extract gives students a simplified and broken down way of accessing the text. The first part poses comprehension and language activities to ensure the text is carefully read. This extract is useful for studying any Victorian novel, as it describes the living areas of the poor in London. However, it can also be used as practice for Language Paper 1 - Fiction texts.

This lesson can easily be edited for the AQA or Edexcel exam specification.
