Students examine the reasons why the NHS was founded in 1948 and also the impact it had on the healthcare and treatment of patients from 1948 to the present day. For example, the lesson looks at the development of NHS hospitals, GP surgeries and the impact of the NHS on men, women and children.

The 21 slide fully resourced lesson contains activities, tasks, practice exam questions, printable resources and all background knowledge:

  • Slide 1: Title slide
  • Slide 2: As You Enter Brain Teaser - with answer and solution
  • Slide 3: Warm Up - Discussion about what is the NHS and when was it established. Definition and date revealed.
  • Slide 4: Starter Task - Students are given 6 healthcare problems and have to think where they would likely to to seek treatment.
  • Slide 5: Recap - This activity recaps the types of diagnostic technology developed in the modern era. Answers provided.
  • Slide 6 - 7: Background information covering the formation and features of the NHS in 1948.
  • Slide 8-9: Task 1 - Students outline and explain the main reasons for the government’s creation of the NHS using a printable worksheet
  • Slide 10-11: Task 2 - A table worksheet for students to outline the basic problems with healthcare before 1948 and then compare this to the NHS after 1948.
