This is a scheme of work, which I have developed, to teach explanation texts to year 4 students. I have written the plans and created the resources from scratch, however, I have used elements of principles discussed in TWR (The Writing Revolution). I refer to SPO planning templates and use the concept of familiar content to teach the children how to write an explanation text. Teaching is focused around the topic of coastal erosion, with a view to children writing their own explanation texts about the water cycle.
