Pupils will play through each term shown on the slide, on their instrument - I used tuned percussion. This helps consolidate understanding of the melodic features such as conjunct/disjunct movement, ornaments etc. We then improvise using words - cabbage, face, dead etc but more able pupils can use whatever pitches they like - to create a motif which includes some of the melodic features already discussed and performed. This leads to a composing task where they compose their own ostinato but have to include a variety of textures and dynamics. The ostinato can be developed to include other melodic features as featured in the presentation.
