A full lesson on George Eliot’s poem ‘In a London Drawingroom’, one of fifteen new poems from the 2023 AQA Poetry Anthology Worlds and Lives cluster of English Literature. This could also be taught to Year 9/KS3 classes as preparation for upcoming GCSEs or as part of a wider unit on Nature/Place poetry.

This ready-to-teach lesson includes:

  • A full PowerPoint that introduces the context for In a London Drawingroom, as well as example annotations, questions and conversational points. (Teacher notes are available on slides to prompt class discussion).
  • A worksheet that includes the themes grid for all poems from the anthology. This document includes both the teacher answers and the blank worksheet for students - you can give students the blank as part of the lesson or the answers depending on teaching style.
  • A ‘Four Key Quotations’ grid which includes a sample quotation and close analysis, as well as three blank rows for students to fill in. This is an easy homework set!

NOTE: The full poem is not included as part of the PPT/worksheet as it is included in the AQA anthology book which is ideal for full annotation if necessary. You can also find the full poem available online.

The lesson can be split into two lessons if needed, with plenty of room to expand on debate topics or work through the key quotations as a class. Both documents are editable if needed, and can be adapted into existing schemes of work or set as an independent cover lesson.
