Unit overview:
In this unit, children will be ‘hooked’ in with a special delivery to class, including the book ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson. After exploring the delivery, they will proceed to create their own Stick people. During shared reading lessons, children will be encouraged to identify the rhyming words within the story and join in with predictable phrases. When reading, children will become familiar with reading words with apostrophes to show contraction.  Next, they will be taught to make simple predictions about what might happen next in the story.  Children will then begin to make inferences about how Stick Man might be feeling at different points within the story, using clues within the text to support them. Once the children are familiar with the story, they will use freeze frames and storyboards to sequence the story, retelling the main events within the story. The class will then explore the text to discover how exclamation marks are used effectively. Following this, the class will receive a letter delivered by Santa Claus! Children will unpick this letter, identifying the main features. They will then plan out their own ideas to write a ‘Thank you’ letter to Santa, from the Stick Man.
