When we had chicks in our classroom we were learning about subtraction. We used the situations of taking (pretend!) fluffy chicks out of boxes to explore subtraction and find how many were left.

The children who were ready to work on a more abstract level filled in the attached sheet, alongside their practical investigations, to begin to make links with number sentences.
