This is designed to be taught to a full cohort of Year 11 students who have one lesson a week of core Religious studies, but are not taking the GCSE.

Students have booklets, rather than exercise books.

The unit includes the following lessons:

  2. Individual autonomy over own body
  3. Religious attitudes towards the sanctity of life
  4. What is abortion?
  5. Religious attitudes towards abortion
  6. What is euthanasia?
  7. Ethical approaches surrounding euthanasia
  8. How does the concept of the sanctity of life impact debates on medical ethics?
  9. Assessment and feedback

The unit discusses the following topics / Case studies:

  • Near Death Experience of Pam Reynolds
  • Panorama 30 minute documentary (Reg Crew and euthanasia) link via googledrive where it can be downloaded for free (in the notes section of ppt) - opens with VLC media player

  • Euthanasia case studies (Anthony Bland; Lillian Boyes, Sue Rodriguez and Mary Ormerod)
  • Links to Malta’s ban on abortion; USA overruling the Roe v. Wade case and Northern Ireland’s laws on abortion

  • Article form the Irish council for Bioethics
