Research lesson on hazard symbols for a lab safety unit. Originally designed for KS4 Special Needs pupils studying Entry Pathways Unit 6205: Making Chemical Compounds, this interactive and research-based lesson is ideal for any science lab safety course. Pupils learn to recognise and describe common hazard symbols, developing essential health and safety awareness alongside ICT and literacy skills.

Lesson Overview:

Starter: A red card/green card quiz where pupils identify hazard symbols. Great for active engagement and quick assessment.

Main Task: Pupils complete a Google Classroom-based research task, template included where they:

Find and insert images of each common hazard symbol

Describe the meaning of each symbol

Extension 1: List examples of chemicals that carry each hazard symbol

Extension 2: Complete additional (less common) hazard symbol descriptions
Plenary: Peer assessment activity where pupils review a partner’s work, offering constructive feedback
