This engaging writing unit uses spine poetry to guide children through the key elements of descriptive writing. Over a series of structured lessons, pupils explore nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and similes, each taught explicitly with examples and discussion.
Each lesson includes opportunities for children to practise using the feature, create class word banks and build vocabulary that can be drawn on in future writing units. The unit culminates in pupils writing their own spine poems inspired by the characters and setting, especially Marinka and the iconic house with chicken legs.
This resource includes:
- 5 fully planned lessons: nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and similes
- WAGOLLs, scaffolded tasks, and hinge questions for each feature
- Differentiated scaffolds
- Word mats and class vocabulary building activities
- Final spine poem writing task with optional sentence and paragraph extension
- Printable poem display and peer feedback tools
Ideal for Upper KS2, this unit develops rich, expressive language while laying a foundation for future creative writing.
