I used these cloze procedure worksheets with mixed ability KS1 classes, usually Year 2, when developing a basic understanding of Remembrance Day and how the use of the poppy came about.** I have deliberately chosen to put these on here for free and so, if you choose to download, I would appreciate it if you could make a minimum £1 donation to the Royal British Legion at your earliest opportunity.**
There are two worksheets providing differentiated opportunities for pupils to identify missing words from the wordbank provided. I have also provided my planning from this lesson although it should be noted that the format etc. is from many years ago and may not be appropriate to today’s requirements.
I used the PowerPoint for illustrative purposes only to provide a simple explanation and generate a discussion starting from the poppies people wear to examples of real poppies, images of First World War trenches, examples of memorials (with a page left for you to add a picture of your own local war memorial) and ending with the statue of the unknown soldier to ask questions such as why were some soldiers “unknown” and why is this statue in Paddington railway station?
