This activity explores the Supreme Court case Powell v. Alabama (1932), which tested whether defendants had the right to a fair trial and legal counsel in serious criminal cases. Students will learn how the Court overturned the convictions of the Scottsboro Boys, ruling that the lack of proper legal representation violated their constitutional rights. The case highlights the importance of due process and helped expand the right to legal counsel under the 14th Amendment, especially in life-threatening situations.
