Description:
This engaging, research-based science lesson introduces pupils to real-life applications of neutralisation reactions. Originally designed for KS4 Special Needs learners studying Entry Pathways Unit 6205: Making Chemical Compounds, it’s equally effective for KS3/KS4 classes learning about the relevance of acids, bases, and neutralisation in everyday life.

Lesson Overview:

Starter/Recap: Pupils answer “What is made when you mix an acid with a base?” and begin identifying useful examples of neutralisation.

Main Task: Pupils complete a digital research task (Google Classroom-ready template included). For each example, they:

Describe how the reaction is used

Explain why it is useful

Give an example reaction

Insert a relevant image

Topics Include:

Fertilisers made from nitric acid

Table salt production

Lime used to neutralise acidic soil

Waste management applications

Tooth decay prevention

Plenary: Pupils reflect on their learning by writing three takeaways on a Post-It or digital comment.
