Year 9 History/RE Lesson: Modern Antisemitism – Echoes of the Holocaust in Today’s World
This lesson helps pupils understand how antisemitism persists in modern society and why it remains so dangerous. Students explore Holocaust denial, conspiracy theories, online hate speech, and recent high-profile incidents such as the Tree of Life synagogue shooting and Kanye West’s promotion of Nazi imagery. They learn how these ideas fuel prejudice and violence, and reflect on how laws can be used as weapons against minorities. Activities include guided reading, comprehension questions, source analysis, and extended writing on how remembering the Holocaust can help challenge modern hate.
Learning aims:
Define modern antisemitism and explain how it spreads today
Describe examples of antisemitic violence and propaganda
Reflect on why conspiracy theories and denial are harmful
Evaluate how education and remembrance can prevent future atrocities
Includes PowerPoint slides (school logos have been removed from the PPT), knowledge checks, discussion questions, and structured writing tasks ready to teach.
