
This KS1 history lesson helps pupils compare their own homes with homes from the 1950s and 1960s. Children investigate household objects from the past, consider how homes have changed over time, and discuss similarities and differences with their own living spaces. The lesson develops comparison, questioning and speaking skills through role-play and hands-on activities.

Lesson Overview / Structure:
★ Starter: Children study a picture of a modern living room and describe how the items make homes comfortable today. They are introduced as “time detectives.”
★ Main Activity: A “Discovery Box” reveals photographs of 1950s/1960s household objects such as a tin bath, coal scuttle and outside toilet. Children discuss the purpose of each item and how it compares to what they use today. In groups, pupils match past objects to modern equivalents.
★ Differentiation: Picture-word matching support and sentence frames for children who need scaffolding. Challenge task for confident learners to write similarities and differences.
★ Plenary: Pupils share their favourite household object from the past and decide whether they would like it in their home today, linking back to the learning objective.
