Boost your students’ understanding of the Junior Cycle Geography Rocks topic with this fun and interactive set of Taboo cards! Perfect for classroom games, group revision, or homework tasks, these cards cover key concepts including igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, the rock cycle, weathering, quarrying, and famous Irish rock formations like the Giant’s Causeway.
Each card challenges students to describe important terms without using common “taboo” words, encouraging deeper thinking and active recall. Ideal for teachers looking to make Geography revision enjoyable and memorable. Suitable for all junior cycle classes preparing for assessments or classroom discussions.
How to Play:
-
Divide the class into teams:
• 2 or more teams work best.
• Each team takes turns trying to get a teammate to guess the main word on the card. -
Setup:
• One player draws a card but doesn’t show the taboo words to the guessers.
• The player tries to describe the main word without saying any of the taboo words listed. -
Time limit:
• Set a timer (e.g., 1 minute) for each turn.
• The team guesses as many cards as possible within the time. -
Rules:
• The describer cannot use the taboo words, parts of the taboo words, or rhymes.
• No spelling out the word or using gestures (unless you want a charades variation).
• If a taboo word is said, the card is discarded and no points are awarded. -
Scoring:
• Teams earn 1 point for each correctly guessed card.
• Play continues for a set number of rounds or until cards run out. -
Winning:
• The team with the most points at the end wins!
Tips for Teachers:
• Use cards as a starter activity or revision game.
• Encourage students to explain why taboo words are related after guessing.
• Adjust time limits or create harder/easier taboo word lists to suit your class.
