Year 9 History/RE Lesson: Liberation and Loss – How Does Remembering Help Prevent Future Atrocities?

This lesson explores the final months of the Holocaust, including the death marches, the liberation of camps such as Buchenwald, and survivor experiences. Pupils learn why the Nazis forced prisoners to march, what Allied soldiers found when camps were freed, and how survivors like Elie Wiesel dedicated their lives to remembrance. Activities include guided reading, gap-fill and comprehension questions, diary writing from the perspective of liberating soldiers, and extended reflection on why memory matters today.

Learning aims:

Explain why the Nazis carried out death marches in 1944–45

Describe what liberators found and how they responded

Reflect on survivor testimonies and the impact of liberation

Evaluate how remembering helps challenge denial and prevent future atrocities

Includes PowerPoint slides (school logos have been removed from the PPT), structured reading tasks, creative writing activities, and discussion questions ready to teach.
