Rocks Summary (KS3)

  1. Sedimentary Rocks

Formation: Made from layers of sediments pressed and cemented together.

Properties: Soft, crumbly, layered, may contain fossils.

Examples: Sandstone, Shale, Limestone.

Uses: Building materials, cement, fossils, soil improvement.

  1. Igneous Rocks

Formation: Formed when magma or lava cools and hardens.

Intrusive: Cool slowly underground, large crystals (e.g., Granite)

Extrusive: Cool quickly on the surface, small crystals (e.g., Basalt)

Properties: Hard, strong, crystalline, no fossils.

Uses: Buildings, roads, tiles, statues.

  1. Metamorphic Rocks

Formation: Formed when existing rocks are changed by heat and pressure.

Properties: Hard, strong, often layered (foliated), no fossils.

Examples: Marble (from limestone), Slate (from shale)

Uses: Flooring, roofing, statues, construction.
