This resource is a student work booklet on the Battles of Verdun and the Somme, complete with exam practice questions to help prepare students for assessment. Students explore the key events of both battles, why casualty numbers were so high, and evaluate the overall impact of the disasters on the course of the First World War. The booklet contains structured activities to build knowledge, analysis, and exam skills. Whilst designed for Cambridge IGCSE History (Depth Study A: The First World War, 1914–18), it is also suitable for other exam boards that cover WW1. The activities link directly to the Cambridge IGCSE & O Level History: 20th Century Coursebook by Paul Grey, which students will need to use alongside the booklet.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Evaluate the impact of the disasters at the Battles of Verdun and the Somme.
  • Explain why so many died at the Battles of Verdun and the Somme.
  • Describe the key events of the Battle of Verdun and the Somme.
