Support for the Nazis – AQA GCSE History (Weimar and Nazi Germany 1918–1939)

This fully resourced lesson focuses on the question: Why did support for the Nazis increase between 1929 and 1932? It is designed for the AQA GCSE History specification but can be easily adapted for other exam boards.

Lesson includes:
Retrieval practice questions to check prior knowledge (self-sufficiency, RAD, women in Nazi Germany, Kristallnacht, Wannsee Conference).
Detailed coverage of the Great Depression and its impact on Germany, showing how unemployment and anger towards the Weimar government fuelled Nazi support.
Exploration of the Appeal of Hitler: charisma, propaganda, speeches, rallies and promises.
Structured tasks, including a match-up activity linking reasons for Nazi growth to evidence and explanations, helping students build strong thematic arguments.
Writing support with model PEEL paragraphs and guidance for linking social, political and economic factors.
A clear overall judgement activity focusing on whether Germany’s economic problems were the most important factor.
