AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the 2016 specification Unit 2C, the optional unit on food management: In this fourth lesson we look at the advantages and disadvantages of the Indus Basin Irrigation System (IBIS) as an example of a large-scale agricultural development.
We start with an Ordnance Survey-themed retrieval practice quiz with some questions around content learned earlier in the section. After briefly looking at the background and history of the IBIS we write a short paragraph locating the river basin. We then create a pie chart using a worksheet that shows the land use in the basin. We then map the various reservoirs, dams and barrages of the irrigation system using a map and latitude and longitude coordinates. After this the students then sort out the advantages and disadvantages of the scheme using a colour coding exercise which they can develop further by categorising them into social, economic and environmental impacts. We then answer a 6-mark practice question with some guidance on how the answer could be structured.
Hope this saves you some valuable planning time.
