
A 20-lesson scheme of learning covering The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. The scheme aims to develop confidence in articulating personal interpretations, close analysis skills, engagement with historical context, and annotation proficiency. Originally designed for the CIE 9695 Literature International AS/A Level.
The slides cover the entire novel and include the following activities:
- Opportunities for debate and discussion
- Guided questions for extract analysis
- An exploration of chronology, genre, and historical context (with links to further reading provided)
- Analysis of key characters
- Options for creative responses
- Writing frames and examples to support paragraph and essay development, along with planning grids
- Recall questions for revision
- A link to a Quizizz for character revision
Originally taught to a Year 12 group as part of the CIE IAL English Literature course, this SoL can be easily adapted to suit a different specification. Please note that the lesson timings were originally based on 80-minute sessions.
