This engaging activity uses Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats method to explore the complex topic of American colonialism. The Six Thinking Hats is a parallel thinking technique that encourages students to examine issues from multiple perspectives before reaching a conclusion.
In this project, students will:
Learn about the Six Thinking Hats approach
Apply each “hat” to analyze American colonialism:

White Hat: Focus on facts and data
Yellow Hat: Explore benefits and positive aspects
Green Hat: Consider alternatives and creative solutions
Black Hat: Identify risks and potential problems
Red Hat: Express emotions and feelings about the topic
Blue Hat: Summarize and draw conclusions

Students will work through each perspective, gathering information and insights. The activity culminates in a final conclusion about whether American colonialism was ultimately positive or negative, supported by evidence from all “hats.”
This project encourages critical thinking, empathy, and a nuanced understanding of historical events. It’s designed to promote thoughtful discussion and help students develop a more comprehensive view of complex historical issues.
