KS3 History Lesson: What Was Happening in West Africa Before European Slavers Arrived?

This lesson introduces students to the rich and thriving societies of West Africa before 1700, focusing on the Kingdom of Mali and the leadership of Mansa Musa. Designed for KS3 students (ages 11–14), the lesson encourages critical thinking and challenges common misconceptions about Africa’s past.

Students will investigate what life was like in West Africa before the Transatlantic Slave Trade, exploring the achievements, culture, and influence of the Mali Empire. Through case studies and engaging activities, they will:

  • Understand key features of West Africa before 1700
  • Explain the significance of Kankan (Mansa) Musa
  • Judge the reasons why West African societies were civilised

This lesson helps students build a balanced understanding of African history, laying strong foundations for future learning about the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the impact of European colonisation.
