Aquinas and the cosmological argument
Aristotle was the idea of the Prime Mover. He argued that the universe must
have a cause that is greater than the universe- and that this is God. The very
first thing that happened (like the fall of the first domino) could not have caused
itself. Something beyond the universe must have caused it. And he said that
the thing which started the whole universe off couldn’t have been the kind of
thing that needed to be caused itself it must be different to the universe that it
started! And this he says shows that God must exist and we can work that out
just by looking around us at the world today – the Cosmological Argument.
BIg Bang Theory
A scientific theory but forward by Catholic priest Georges Lenaitre in the
1930s about the creation of the universe. Recent scientific discoveries such as
cosmic background radiation and evidence of the universe still expanding
further cement this argument.
Points to consider:
The cosmological argument could still argue that God caused the Big Bang
If the Big Bang has to have a cause then so should God - What caused God?
