This thought-provoking KS3 lesson explores the impact of the British Empire on Australia. Students will examine how colonisation began with Captain Cook’s arrival in 1770 and how the First Fleet in 1788 marked the start of massive changes—especially for Aboriginal Australians. Through pupils will investigate British settlement, the exploitation of land and people, and the long-lasting effects of empire.

Learners will also explore trade, social structures, and Australia’s journey to independence, while questioning whether the empire brought progress or not.
