
KS3 History Lesson: What Was the Impact of the British Empire?
This lesson builds on students’ knowledge of the British Empire by exploring its impact on different people and places. Designed for KS3 students (ages 11–14), the lesson encourages critical thinking and introduces multiple perspectives on the Empire’s legacy.
Students will investigate how the Empire affected individuals and nations, and consider what Britain gained from its colonies. Using case studies and engaging activities, they will:
- Understand key features of the British Empire
- Explain the benefits of Empire for Britain by analysing the role of different countries
- Evaluate the impact of the British Empire on different individuals and judge its overall importance
This lesson helps students develop balanced historical thinking and lays strong foundations for future learning about colonialism and its consequences.
