This is a 29 page booklet which contains the following in order to help students prepare for the Methods In Context question for AQA A Level Sociology Paper 1:

  • Space for starters and retrieval activities
  • checklist of methods
  • checklist of common types of participants
  • checklist of common education research topics
  • suggested guide for structuring a 20 mark MIC essay (clearly stated that this is simply an example, students can show autonomy over their essay design)
  • example question with item and space for planning notes (good as a first practice, modelled by teacher)
  • 2nd example - the second example question includes a model answer so students can analyse this before attempting their own in full.
  • concise defintions of key terms including validity and reliability.
  • matching activity - key terms and definitions
  • 5 separate paragraph practice activities - these have model paragraphs provided in the answer pack, and are useful for guided practice and live feedback lessons. Students can do a timed practice, then study the model and compare with their own, whilst teacher circulates and gives feedback.
  • Activity - would you recommend this method? (table)
  • Outline of key aspects where sensitive topics may affect certain participants (10 guidance points to consider - useful to set as flipped learning!)
  • 5 research scenarios to evaluate - good as a group activity to encourage high quality classroom talk.
  • Memory retrieval tasks x 4 - includes fill in blanks, true or false, etc. Handy as starters or to break up heavier lessons.
  • Practice essay questions (original not past paper questions x3)
  • Each question has a suggested plan in the answer pack, and question 2 has a full model essay.
  • The back cover of this booklet has a table which outlines the mark bands for the MIC essay.

This booklet is designed for use in lessons or independent revision, whether introducing Methods in Context from scratch or consolidating knowledge. Grounded in Rosenshine’s Principles, it incorporates guided practice, retrieval activities, live feedback opportunities, and clear modelling to support structured learning. Ideal for Sociology teachers who balance interactive lessons with academic rigour, it ensures students develop both confidence and depth in their understanding. Also ideal for non-specialist teachers who would feel reassured by an answer pack and model essays.
