Year 9 History/RE Lesson: From Citizens to Prisoners – The Journey into the Ghettos
This lesson helps students understand how Nazi persecution escalated from discrimination to confinement in ghettos. Pupils learn about anti-Jewish laws, propaganda, and the gradual stripping of rights that isolated Jewish communities. They explore whether the ghettos were created mainly out of hate, fear, or control. Activities include guided reading, analysing propaganda images, completing comprehension questions, and reflecting on why many people did not resist persecution.
Learning aims:
Explain how laws and propaganda were used to dehumanise Jewish citizens
Describe life in the ghettos and the impact on individuals and families
Evaluate whether ghettos were motivated by hatred, fear, or the desire for control
Reflect on why persecution was not widely opposed
Includes PowerPoint slides (school logos have been removed from the PPT), comprehension activities, structured reflection questions, and creative tasks ready to teach.
