Year 9 History/RE Lesson: The Many Faces of Jewish Resistance – Was It Courage or Futility?
This lesson challenges the myth that Jews went passively to their deaths by exploring diverse forms of resistance during the Holocaust. Pupils learn about uprisings in camps and ghettos, the work of partisans, secret education, hidden archives, and cultural defiance. They also study the immense obstacles to resistance, including starvation, deception, and collective punishment. Activities include guided reading on the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, analysing resistance cards with survivor stories, comprehension tasks, and extended writing evaluating whether Jewish resistance was an act of courage or futility.
