Help your pupils grasp invertebrate classification with these fun, folding activities. This hands-on resource has 2 activities and focuses on features and examples of 5 invertebrate groups: insects, arachnids, molluscs, crustaceans, and annelids.

The resource is designed for upper KS2 but could also be suitable for KS3 science.

Prior knowledge

Students should already have been introduced to the 5 groups featured in this resource.

Activity 1 - invertebrate group features foldout

Pupils create a foldout showing the features of 5 different invertebrate groups: insects, arachnids, crustaceans, mollusks, and annelids. They’ll arrange 5 labels on their template, matching one to each group, before assembling their foldout.

Alternatively, have students write some features in each blank box.

Directions for students are included.

Activity 2 - invertebrate group examples ‘lift the flap’ book

Pupils create a ‘lift the flap’ book showing animal examples from the 5 groups covered in activity 1. There are 15 animals to sort (3 for each group), and they are included in both colour and in black and white.
