This empowering lesson resource helps learners build emotional resilience by identifying what they can and cannot control. Through scenario-based discussions, interactive reflection tasks, and creative visual tools, pupils will explore how their mindset and response can influence outcomes—even in challenging situations. Rooted in emotional regulation and metacognitive awareness, this lesson supports learners in managing stress, reducing overwhelm, and recognising their own power to choose their reactions.

How to Use

  1. Begin with a reflection: Pupils recall a moment they felt out of control and explore what triggered the emotion.
  2. Introduce the concept: Define the Circle of Control using visuals and discuss its importance.
  3. Scenario analysis: Pupils analyse realistic situations to determine what’s within or outside of their control.
  4. Use the reflection grid: Pupils break down responses using Emotion Works-style prompts (trigger, emotions, body sensations, behaviour, strategies).
  5. Build a class display: Co-create a visual Circle of Control using sticky notes, drawings, or iPad tools.
  6. Create individual toolkits: Learners record personal strategies to manage out-of-control feelings.
  7. End with a learning reflection: Pupils consider what they’ve learned about emotional regulation and personal growth.
