Year 9 History/RE Lesson: Was Hitler’s Hate Unique, or Part of a Bigger History?

This lesson explores the roots of antisemitism to help pupils understand whether Hitler’s hatred was an isolated phenomenon or part of a longer pattern. Students learn about Nazi racial ideology, the myth of the Aryan race, and how Hitler built on centuries of prejudice. They study examples of antisemitism in Roman times, the Middle Ages, and modern Europe to see how old ideas were repackaged to justify genocide. Activities include guided reading, comprehension questions, sentence starters for structured writing, and reflection tasks evaluating whether Hitler’s hate was unique or part of European history.

Learning aims:

Explain Nazi beliefs about race and antisemitism

Describe historical examples of antisemitism before the Nazis

Reflect on how prejudice can build over time and be manipulated

Evaluate whether Hitler’s ideology was unique or rooted in wider history

Includes PowerPoint slides (school logos have been removed from the PPT), structured reading, comprehension tasks, and writing activities ready to teach.
