This lesson for Y8 up to Y10 students focuses in exploring the langague and different cultural aspects of Switzerland through small Workshop/ Ateliers.
The starter (match-up) introduces the main vocabulary, after the students should get around 6-7 minutes per Atelier.

Atelier 1: The Geography of Switzerland
This atelier focuses on learning about Switzerland’s geography. Students explore and label major cities, lakes, and mountains on a map of Switzerland. An extra task encourages them to examine a map of Bienne and identify important streets, helping develop their map-reading and geographical skills.

A Map of Switzerland and ev. Biel/Bienne is required.

Atelier 2: Swiss Specialties
In this atelier, students discover traditional Swiss recipes, such as Rösti, Fondue, and Swiss hot chocolate. They translate the ingredients into English, learn key cooking terms in German, and match recipes with pictures. An additional activity introduces them to iconic Swiss foods like chocolate, cheese, and Aromat seasoning.

Atelier 3: The Languages of Switzerland
This atelier introduces students to Switzerland’s linguistic diversity by matching words in Swiss German, Italian, Romansh, and French with their English equivalents. Students also practice identifying languages through short sentences and writing their own phrases in French.

Atelier 4: Swiss Inventions
This atelier teaches students about famous Swiss innovations, including the Toblerone chocolate, Rolex watches, the Swiss Army Knife, and Ricola candies. Students learn the history and features of these inventions and answer quiz questions to deepen their understanding of Swiss creativity and craftsmanship.

Atelier 5: Swiss Festivals
In this atelier, students explore important Swiss festivals, such as Swiss National Day, L’Escalade, the Fête des Vignerons, and the Basel Carnival. They learn about the traditions, history, and cultural significance of each festival while completing quizzes and expanding their vocabulary in German and English.

Atelier 6: Game
As additional Atelier students might try the game Jassen, Jass cards or Poker cards without the numbers 3-6 and the Joker are required.
