Students use this lesson to clearly explain the reasons why there was limited progress in developing new ideas about the cause of illness in the Medieval period. They focus on factors such as: the role of the Church and the influence of Galen.

The 19 slide fully resourced lesson contains activities, tasks, practice exam questions, printable resources and all background knowledge:

  • Slide 1: Title slide
  • Slide 2-3: Warm Up - Students are given 8 facts about Medieval beliefs about illness and have to decide which of them are similarities with modern ideas and which are different. Answers and explanations provided.
  • Slide 4-5: Medieval Recap - Students are shown 8 set of images and have to use these images to figure out which aspects of Medieval understanding they represent. Answers provided.
  • Slide 6: Predictive Learning - Before students are taught the reasons, they have to use their knowledge and think for themselves why there was a lack of progress in developing new ideas about the cause of illness. Prompt questions provided.
  • Slide 7-9: Task 1 - Students are given a printable grid which contains 20 factors to help them explain the reasons for the limited knowledge about the cause of illness. They use the key to categorise each reason. Two differentiated worksheets provided.
  • Slide 10: Task 1 Alternative - A table based activity to help students make notes on the factors which limited knowledge about the cause of disease.
  • Slide 11: Task 2 - Students are provided with 6 sentence starters and have to use them to complete facts about the opinions of people living in Medieval England about why there was little progress.
  • Slide 12: Challenge Questions with image of the ‘Zodiac Man’.
  • Slide 13-14: Learning Review -A gap fill activity to recap the main Medieval beliefs about the cause of illness. Answers provided.
